Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
Step 2) We must remove the green or blue top. Two methods:
Step 3) Keeping the cartridge on paper towels, take a syringe about 8 ml.
It is important to keep the cartridge touching the paper towel while filling to avoid the formation of large ink drops on the bottom of the cartridge. If these ink drops form, cross-color contamination is likely because the ink can migrate back up into the other color chambers.
Step 4) Insert the needle fully into the appropriate hole (from the printhead side, the colors are probably Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow for the 51649A, and Black, Photo-Cyan, and Photo-Magenta for the C1816A. Insert a toothpick and withdraw it to be sure.)
Inject the ink very S-L-O-W-L-Y and watch until the sponge is saturated. (Some colors will not be empty, so don't expect the sponge to absorb the entire amount.) Be sure to inject deeply into the sponge to avoid trapping air bubbles in the bottom of the cartridge.
Step 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other two colors.
Step 6) Put the top back on and tape down in place.
Step 7) Set above a paper towel for an hour as a drip precaution. Expect a few drips. Do not allow the paper towel to touch the bottom of the cartridge, as it will draw out all of the ink. Remove any large hanging drops immediately.
